
We are now in the midst of summer and the high temperatures are a
reminder of that! It seems we spend a lot of time here in Michigan
wishing for warmer days when we are struggling with temperatures in the
teens, and then when our summer arrives, we wish for cooler temperatures
when the thermometer hits the upper 80s! Are we
ever satisfied?
As the summer temperatures rise, there are some important safety measures you should take if you are going to be outside a lot. Children, senior citizens, athletes and people who work outside for a living are the most susceptible to heat conditions that can be life-threatening. This month our cover feature discusses some of the most common heat-related illnesses that can occur and the steps you should take to avoid ending up in an emergency room. The headlines were all over the news this past few weeks about the incidence of diabetes among Americans. A recent health report stated that nearly 24% of Americans are either diabetic or in a pre-diabetic state. That is 1-in-4 people. As you know, diabetes is responsible for many other conditions including diabetic retinopathy – a very serious eye disease which can lead to blindness.
