Many Estheticians Not Following Safety Codes In Metro Detroit:

According to the U.S. Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA) guideline, all estheticians must, among other things, wear gloves and perform the one-time-use per applicator policy for application of hair removal products.
A recent article published in Skin Deep Magazine states that “universal precautions (UPs) are regulations that enforce the use of personal protective equipment to provide barriers between the employee and any potential danger or contamination. Gloves are the requisite UP barriers to harmful and contaminating exposures during these services.”
Rochester based esthetician Tiffany Taylor has been an advocate for safe and effective body waxing since 2004 and was recently featured on WDIV Local 4 to discuss the salon safety. She uses the highest standards in waxing methods and products.
“I don’t double dip wax applicators and have spent years studying the laws about the services I offer,” said Taylor. “It’s important for men and women to know the safety regulations and make sure their estheticians and spa providers are following them.”
It was in 2004 while in beauty school that Taylor first learned to wear gloves, and not re-dip the applicator during waxing services. These techniques are mandated in every beauty school and salon across the country but many salons do not enforce these rules.
“It is a necessity to spread the truth about waxing to clients that are putting themselves at risk, being waxed by technician’s that do not follow these rules,” states Taylor.
Many clients want a quick solution to hair removal and salon owners are often looking to cut costs without taking into consideration the sanitation and safety of their clients or their staff.
Taylor is now an educator offering workshops, video tutorials and a blog to clients and estheticians that are interested in learning and practicing safer waxing methods.
What to look for in an esthetician:
• Are they licensed?
• Is their work space sanitary?
• Have they received additional training in the service the you are seeking?
• Are they willing listen to specific requests?
• What are others saying about them?

I think it is always important to think about where these people are getting their Esthetician training from. If it’s not reputable then you have to question the legitimacy of the business.
